Toxic Tampons and Fragile Faces

When it comes to unknowingly abusing our health, women have a special place in our society. We have products specially designed for them, marketed and pushed on to them, of which have proven to inhibit true expression of health and cover up unresolved insecurity.
Here are some examples that continue to pollute our societies blood stream: Makeup, hormonal birth control, high heels, plastic bottles, perfumes/fragrances, vaginal “cleansers,” bras, tampons and unrealistic body images. Do you get the picture?
I know some of them sound a little crazy, and probably make you think I'm a freaky-alternative-conspiracy theorist, but stay with me, I still (occasionally) recommend women wear bras and speak to MD's. What I want to talk about a little more and offer some insight and awareness into is; “The skins function and what we shouldn't really be putting on it + alternatives, of course”.

Five of the top nine pesticides used on cotton globally
(cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite, and trifluralin)
are KNOWN cancer-causing chemicals. Is your tampon toxic?

The skin has been tooted as the largest organ system in the human body (though the surface area of our intestines are actually bigger), covering at most 16>22 square feet of surface area and accounting for up to 16% of our total body mass. Our skin has been shown to separate and inform us of our surroundings both peripherally and sensory, it protects us from becoming internally saturated by the rain, spilt alcohol and sea waters, it also acts as cushioning for deeper tissues where synthesis of the holy vitamin D3 and cholesterol sulphate takes places. Along with its most pronounced yet under appreciated roles of 'waste excretion and body temperature regulation':
Our body temps are fundamentally regulated by neural feedback mechanisms, which have a primary role running through the hypothalamus in the brain, then onto the pituitary and thyroid gland. The hypothalamus is our control mechanism and is also responsible for sensing temperature changes.
For example if your body temperature where to creep over 37 degrees, then your hypothalamus would signal for you to start sweating and with every .1 degree further you go.. the more you sweat..and sweat, opening your skins eccrine glands in order to either cool the body or get rid of unnecessary pollutants!

Though on the other end of the thermometer, if you decide you don't want to eat enough and place serious stress provoking demands on your system because the latest silky magazine says you've got to be 7 stone, then you can expect; vasoconstriction, shivering, increased muscle excitability and various hormones (T4, TSH, epinephrine) being funnelled down to aid in heat production in order to prevent you from becoming infested with parasites, fungus (Fungus can only thrive at temps below 36.6 degrees) and anxiety.

As you might of guessed our supple skin is a true master piece of nuero-sensory and metabolic function and reflection of how in balance we truly are… So why do we abuse it?

Well I've spoken about this before and it all starts with the first A… no not Anxiety, Awareness!

Not many are aware of the skins ability to absorb and excrete. Substances whether pharmaceutical, beauty care, salts or vitamin oils that are placed onto our skin, can penetrate into the underlying tissue and reach the blood stream very quickly (sub 60 seconds). Products such as Epsom salts work by providing magnesium and sulphur nutrition via the skin, rather than via the process of our less efficient (at times) digestive system. Though its important to appreciate, this pathway is no different for foreign toxic substances that saturate our environment and are accumulating in us, contributing to acne, eczema, crappy PMS, smelly arm pits, asthma and Alzheimer's.

Your only as healthy as the environment you live in (blood stream, air, food, water, soil) - Troy Casey
The Suns UVB combined with the cholesterol sulphate,
offers synthesis of vitamin D (calcitriol) and a free glow
i.e. natures foundation.

A lot of what determines whether a substance will penetrate the skin is its molecular weight, the skin will keep out molecules of a larger molecular weight. Though when your skin is wet, penetration of the skin is enhanced, thus many products contain hydrating buffers to enhance absorption of many "healing" or fortifying compounds, or more commonly toxic ingredients. Hence this is why so many "skin care products" are advised to be used when washing. Though this is where a large percentage of people are promoting a cascade of unconscious metabolic inhibition and systemic stress, whilst not even thinking twice about it.

The FACT that substances can be absorbed through the skin is as good a reason as any to avoid topical treatments containing hormones (unless absolutely required), heavy metals or steroids that will undoubtedly by design, make their way into your system are likely to cause a silent case of hormonal kayos, that you'll probably just blame on "your time of the month", "its just my personality", "that always happens", " I just can't sleep at night, lets take a pill" and all the other acute, unconscious excuses… so lets not wait until the symptoms and excuses get chronic!

Well hopefully through some awareness your now slightly more open to a degree of acceptance (if not now, then check out the references for further eduction). Here are a list of the many unknown compounds that pollute our "body care, haircare, armpit care, teeth care, rude bits care"… products, and have actually been linked to a huge number of neurological and metabolic deterioration and evidently toxicity within.

Go intelligently when choosing products containing these chemical elements…
"a chemical is NOT a food"- Paul Chek

House hold terrorists:
  • Chlorine: Not only a bleach but also a potent disinfectant, able to kill or control all kinds of microorganismy-germy-bacterialy things. For that reason you'll likely find it everywhere; from kitchen cleansers, to swimming pools, tap water and showers. It has been proven to even displace the iodine reactive protein from a humans thyroid gland (hypothyroidism anyone?) and inhibit protelytic enzyme production (constipation anyone?). Look to implement a chlorine filter to your water supply or search out a spring water supply near you, (try to avoid the bottled waters) and be conscious about trying to purchase safer cleaning alternatives. 'Malt vinegar and water mixed into a spray bottle is a super alternative for cleaning kitchen bits'.
  • BPA/BHT: A highly toxic plastic chemical used as a can lining in brands of some infant formulas. Also found in water bottles, microwave food products and most cheap food packaging, this chemical is used to produce polycarbonate and epoxy plastics. For babies, check food container labels and beware of polycarbonate plastic baby bottles. Chemical leaching and reactions can occur when plastic is heated.
BHT is banned in many european countries, though these two preservatives are considered carcinogenic but remain in U.S and UK manufactured foods that contain oil as they retard rancidity. Found in foods and body products such as Weight watchers microwave foods, Gillette shaving gels and Nivea creams!
  • Fabric Softeners: Should be avoided completely…ideally. They tend to leave a chemical film which never washes out completely. They have been documented as being irritating to sensitive individuals e.g. asthmatics, largely due to the irritation of the mucosa membrane once inhaled and in close contact. As a harmless alternative; the Gerson Therapy recommends adding 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle, softening the clothes and eliminating static cling.
  • Flouride: Despite popular belief, fluoride is not a nutrient. Flouride has been proven to effect every tissue in the body inducing oxidative stress, lethargy, apathy, bone cancer, lowers IQ (calcification of pineal gland) and demineralisation of bone, nails and teeth i.e. weakening and brittle. Its found in toothpastes, certain tapped/bottled water supplies, mouthwash and is originally a waste product from the aluminium industry and prior to that used in Nazi Germany's regime to poison the jews (sodium fluoride)… and now your consuming that 2, 3, 4, 5x daily… that undermines common sense to the highest degree!

Could it be, that the high degree of estrogenic forming
compounds found in shaving gels, plastic bottles and sun creams
are largely contributing to the feminization of males..?

You shouldn't need a PhD is chemistry to choose safe and yet still very effective cosmetics,
supplements and personal care products.

  • ParabensParabens have been used for 50 years in cosmetics, food and other consumer products. In cosmetics they are used in a variety of products designed to be applied to the skin, particularly the axilla and breast, and include moisturisers, gels and body lotions. Parabens have antimicrobial and preservative properties and extend shelf-life. Parabens are readily absorbed through the skin and gastrointestinal. Parabens have also been suggested as the agents in body care formulations are involved in breast cancer development because of their ready absorption through the skin as intact esters, their hormonal activity and their reproductive toxicity that aid in the production of estrogens. But other suggestions are for the role of aluminium as well as siloxanes or cyclosiloxanes that contribute to the damaging of the central nervous system, that are present in high proportions of personal care products e.g Gillette shaving gel, Vaseline products, 'proactiv acne creams and Listerine/Colgate/Oral-B mouthwash's (Darbre, 2003 and 2004; McGrath, 2003; Bando et al, 1997).
  • Toluene:  found naturally in crude oil and in a tree named the tolu. Its commonly added to and is used in the making of many products such as paint thinners, rubber, varnish and hair dyes. Its also used in nail products to suspend the color and form a smooth finish across the nail. While the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has set limits for worker exposure to toluene, it is likely to assume that nail salon workers are exposed to unacceptably high levels of the chemical. Largely without sufficient ventilation and environmental monitoring equipment, for extended periods of time, toluene is a well studied respiratory bad boy.
  • Triclosan: Initially developed as a surgical scrub for medical professionals, in recent years it has been added to a host of products, from kitchen cutting boards, soaps to shoe material, detergents, toothpastes and even shoe cleaner, in order to kill bacteria and fungus and prevent "natural smells". This product has been linked to down regulating thyroid hormone concentrations, thus inhibiting energy production and its waste disposal has been linked to polluting many wildlife habitats and rivers!
  • Benzophenone: This horrible chemical is probably the most notorious and most popular with regards to positive carcinogenic outcomes during studies within the last 15 years. Its used in personal care products such as lip balm, lip gloss, blushing skin agents and nail polish to protect the products from UV light. Derivatives of benzophenone, such as benzophenone-2 (BP2) and oxybenzone (BP3) are common ingredients in sunscreens and after sun products typically found in Nivea and Radox products. Benzophenone is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. These chemicals are linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, and organ system toxicity. (Follow the link to over 30 studies linking this carcinogenic chemical).
  • Nitrosamines:  Nitrosamines can form in nearly every kind of personal care product, including
mascara, concealer, conditioner, baby shampoo, pain-relief salve and sunless tanning lotion. A derivative of nitrosamines is used as a preservative in tobacco and animal meats, both of which have been associated with being pulmonary carcinogens. They
are not on the ingredient label, therefore consumers cannot easily tell which products contain them. A good place to start is to avoid products with DEA, TEA and other ethanol amine compounds, such as; Boots nail polish removers, Vaseline moisturisers/lip balms, Tresemme shampoo and Gillette shaving gels, since these contribute to nitrosamine formation.
  • Dioxins: Dioxins (doesn't sound great does it "Di") are associated with abnormal tissue growth in the abdomen and reproductive organs, abnormal cell growth in the body in general (cancer, anyone?) are an endocrine disruptor, and can suppress the immune system. Used notoriously in cotton based products (most sprayed pesticide crop on the planet btw) and for bleaching material; cotton buds and pads, female tampons and various other female hygiene products, facial wipes etc..
These are just a hand-full to promote a little understanding and appreciation for the degree of toxicity we expose ourselves to everyday, all day and for most people these times of exposure are most cherished i.e. putting make up on, moisturising, bathing, painting nails etc...

There are always cleaner
alternatives!

It is important to note that the type of cosmetic e.g. an underarm deodorant versus a body lotion or moisturiser, is irrelevant. What is important is the chemicals used and the frequent application to the skin, that commonly covers the upper body, chest, breast or axilla. The lymphatic drainage of the breast is an important consideration and although the principal route is drainage out of the breast and to the axilla, any drainage pattern from any area of the breast can occur. One of the lymphatic systems primary responsibilities is to move and excrete fluids and fats as well as transport white blood cells, the topical lotions and chemical cocktails will undoubtedly drain into near by locating lymph tissue thus effecting its primary roles and leading to stagnation of fluids and accumulation of toxins... not a great idea!

"In short, preclinical, molecular and epidemiological evidence supports a role for estrogen in all stages of breast tumour development, 9/10 skin lotions today will promote estrogenic production" (Goss & Strasser-Weippl, 2004).

Now, there are loads of awesome alternatives that YOU can either make yourself (or is that not cool?) or purchase from highly respected retailers and or small peeps near by you. I'll pop a few lists and links to the guys/girls I do and have used before, of which are clean and honest about what they do and don't use in their products:

Kingfisher toothpaste
Dr Mercola sun cream
Red23
Aluminium Free armpit roller
Natracare Organic tampons, sanitary towels (I haven't personally used these… obviously)

Bicarb, coconut oil, oregano oil, mint oil, fennel, sea water/salt, frankincense, clove = all beautiful simple ingredients to replace the other chemical laden crap!

Be wise, if you can't eat it, don't put it on your skin.

Stay informed.

In search for optimal SLEEP

Restful sleep is essential to maintaining optimal cognition, sound energy production, a regulated endocrine system and a functional body weight. The higher quality of sleep, the more rested the body will be, the less lactic acid and histamine in the way (non-oxidative-glycolytic metabolism) and thus more energy the mitochondria are able to efficiently turn out through our oxidative pathways i.e. You feel great!

Unfortunately, there are plenty of people out there finding it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, wake up easily or simply cannot sleep at all. A few months in India and time in North Africa gave me a small insight into other cultures views and patterns around sleeping. Amongst all the common ideologies surrounding the cause of sleep disturbances i.e. ageing, menopause, stress, too much sugar, eating too close to bed time, electromagnetic frequencies etc.. the one commonality found is the direct affect all of
these factors have on blood sugar regulation.
Whilst the North Africans and North/East Indians seemed to consume typically a diet abundant in starchy grains, fruits, roots, foliage, eggs and dairy, their sleeping habits on the whole promote 6-8 hours of regeneration at night (10/12pm-5-6am) and anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours of daytime kips. It seemed common to note, that the small societies and people who had restricted availability only to the foods native to their land (rice, eggs, milk, foliage, fruit, wheat), had quite often, regular, optimal sleep patterns, irregular cases of a compromised immune system (accept the cavities found in the tobacco chewers), athletic physiques and awesome facial structure (observations).

Though still, throughout the world insomnia; which is caused by a chronic and vicious cycle of unrecovered and perpetual stress, is getting to know every age, race and sex due to a large number of environmental stressors. Though stress can be a million different things internal and/or external, a slowed metabolic rate is a result of our chronic exposures to it. (Stress = every environmental factor that interferes with energy production and the integrity of an organism on every level, starting with the cell).

When the metabolic rate has slowed, the body has no option but to compensate with adrenaline, ACTH, and various adaptive metabolic hormones, placing the body into a hyper-adrenal state. The adrenaline helps to sustain blood sugar and body temperature by causing vasoconstriction to the skin (cold hands, nose and feet) and can also lead to disrupted sleep and an accelerated heart rate. In old age, the metabolic rate is decreased, the commonality of coldness sets in and sleep becomes regularly unsound….
What do you see? Dedication, yes. Perseverance, yes.
Hormonal havoc, uh yes. Metabolic damage, defiantly.
Crap sleep, most likely yes. If its a dream go for it,
but the message is to understand the unnatural/
unrealistic practices being done to achieve this look.

"The key to quality sleep is high energy metabolism and maintaining optimal body temperature (98-98.6F or 36.5-37C). Children sleep well because of their ability to maintain a high body temperature and produce energy (ATP) and carbon dioxide"- Broda Barnes.

When blood sugar falls at night the body relies on stored glycogen from the liver. Though individuals with slow metabolic rates (elderly, dieters, calorie restricters, ketogenic goers, hyper-estrogenic populations) or low body temperature individuals, have a limited amount of glycogen reserve. So when adrenaline and glucogon peaks naturally between 2-4am, and because the body is already in a compensatory state due to limited energy reserves, it is common to wake with a pounding heart and have difficulty falling back to sleep!

  • Create a sleep schedule and routine. If you are currently getting to bed at 12am, start trying to get to bed 15 minutes earlier. Do this for 2 weeks and shave another 15 minutes off until you are getting to bed no later then 10:30pm. Walking away and switching off all blue lighted frequencies i.e. t.v's, laptop and mobiles/pads etc.. 1-2 hours prior to getting your head down is probably the wisest thing you could do in order to establish a sound, less disruptive circadian (and even the dorks at Harvard agreed).

  • Turn off and make distance between you and any source of high field electromagnetic frequency (we obviously can't avoid it all)…. So by switching off and removing any sources of Wifi, bluetooth, infrared, microwave, and handsfree technologies i.e. ya mobile phone, that are in close proximity or in same room as where you sleep. If you tend to feel like you don’t get any deep sleep, or that you’re unsure if you actually fell asleep or not, that is a common sign that your nervous system is being “irritated” by EMF (watch/read about the concerns surrounding EMFs here and here and the dangers of radiation, physicians arn't aware, so you got to do your own research).

  • Have a night time snack 30-60 minutes prior to going to bed. This can be small and what is recommended will vary per individual. Find what works for you. The key is to include carbohydrates and salt for the purpose of down regulating adrenaline and cortisol, helping you to sleep more soundly and wake up refreshed! My personal favourite that works for me is a Mango chutney (make your own) or half a teaspoon of raw honey+salt (no iodised shit). The high percentage of fructose:glucose ratio (sucrose) in both the mango and honey places limited reliance on insulin during assimilation, as the fructose acts to enhance glucose oxidation within the mitochondria i.e. tells the body to turn off our glucocorticoid stimulating hormones…so we can relax!

Anytime, anywhere, grab the sun's light.
  • Maintaining optimal vitamin D3 and B12 blood levels. This was a recommendation tooted by Dr Garrett Smith NMD back in 2012 and has stuck with me ever since. His reasoning for maintaining these essential vitamins is largely due to their role in optimising cellular respiration (energy production). It can take up to four weeks for oral B12 (pills) to take an effect when taken at the study dosage of 3000mcg per day, however, many people notice improvements in their sleep after 1 or 2 injections of 5000mcg B12 intramuscularly. Note many well published studies and practitioners don't recommend the standard synthetic form of B12 'cyanocobalamin', as the liver struggles to convert any into its active form of 'methylcobalamin'. So rather, a prescribed injection of methylcobalamin is recommended for optimal synthesis. As for D3, if you can't get the preferred dosage of sunlight everyday and are like me and live in the not so bright, northern hemisphere, try using a form of red-light shining down on you when ever inside. As for oral supplementation, theres some bad rap surrounding the use of D2 and many "PhDs" are recommending the use of 'drop-liquid' formula of D3 instead, I personally use the red-light and expose myself to sunlight as much as possible, when possible.

  • Make your meals regulating. Throughout the day, all day, if your not meeting your energy demands and managing your blood sugar levels and daily stressors effectively, you can bet your systems are going to wind up into a ball of perpetual stress! This is where individualisation really comes in, what works for you? a plate of tropical ripe fruit and an omelette? a bowl of starch and animal flesh?, a litre of milk and some berries? or a liquified form of smoothed minerals.. ?whatever stage of healing your at, making sure your consuming enough that your body has a
Coconut water; Rich in potassium,  helps keep sodium in circulation
(great for people with hypothyroidism) assists in carbohydrate metabolism
(great fore regulating blood sugar), as well as increases blood volume
                               (great for pregnant women).
surplus of nutrients and minerals to catalyse energy, to carry out all metabolic_emotional processes. Or you could end up finding yourself sparked upright in bed at 3am with a windmill of thoughts and a pounding pulse… sound familiar?

  • More C02, MORE SLEEP: (Taken from my blog post "mouth breathers dilemma")                                                                                                            Since nasal breathing seems to be the preferred route during sleep, nasal obstruction frequently leads to nocturnal mouth breathing, snoring and ultimately obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). When the individual begins to dysfunctionally transition towards mouth breathing, their ability to retain sufficient carbon dioxide (C02) is reduced, though their rate of breathing is increased, otherwise known as hyperventilation. Now C02 isn't just a useless waste product of metabolic-respiration, it plays a vital role in the dilation of blood vessels and transportation of oxygen via the haemoglobin, your blood cells may be carrying sufficient oxygen but without the CO2 it will struggle to be released. Not only that, CO2 enhances sleep quality during REM stages, rids the system of ammonia and urea and down regulates histamine- mucosa production (thats why asthmatics often have to clear their trachea, due to low CO2). Not only is the CO2 deficiency a risk factor associated with sleep apnea, at the same time as the mouth being open the lower jaw begins to drop posteriorly. In other words, as the individual is lying supine on their back, with the mouth beginning to open the mandible (lower jaw/chin region) will move backwards and down closing the airway, leading to the poor oxygen supply and CO2 retention. This lack of air forces the central nervous system to perceive a stressful situation, initiating the adrenal cortex to become stimulated, promoting adrenaline, histamine and various glucocortisiods to send signals towards the neurotransmitters in the hypothalamus/brain stem to wake you up! Leading to the evident lack of sleep and constant waking around 2-4am….

A whole approach to optimising functional sleep habits is by far the best approach if one wishes to realign their health status. Regulate your blood sugar, you regulate your sleep, to regulate your health.

Be wise.

Lifting as a life-style: Time on the Indian East Coast!

India isn't a place of comparisons, sure you can find its cuisines nestled in every corner of the globe and its peoples trying to influence every sector of every industry, but the uniqueness that hits you on your first 'three wheeled' ride out of the airport is probably the time where you begin to loose yourself and start becoming FUNcomfortable in this concreted jungle!

I took upon a Weightlifting Internship based somewhere in India. I was blessed with the role to continue the development of the Junior Academy leading into the competitive season and the recently started community projects, in the vast tribal regions of south Orissa.

A community project in the near by schools of Lathi village was an enthusiastic welcoming to the east coast. You might expect children to volunteer and put forward their name for certain inter/after school
Sightless positioning_proprioceptive dominance
activities that take their fancy, but over here your selected (to a degree) and boi wasn't the selection process different. Having many small 'whipper snappers' already taking up the stage in Indias youth/junior weightlifting scene, the idea was to select "heavy weights" to partake over the next 6 months in a movement based conditioning program design to promote quality, injury proof, tissue tolerant movers, into timely weightlifters…Well looking for "heavy weights" in two rural schools in largely still tribal communities full of predominately vegetarians, is probably like trying to find out who stole your last banana during a famine.. hard! So, towards anthropometrics (body composition) it was. An ideal weightlifting specimen might look different to each individual and highly unique from each continent to the next, but what I and Cormac were also looking for were healthy-semetrical human beings. Wide faces, aligned teeth, nasal breathers (at rest), big hands, stable upright physiques (though always adaptable), long arms and evidently girls or boys that weighed above 50kg… (Yep heavy weights).

Time spent with the children and seeing them grow as competent, confident individuals was an awesome experience to be apart of (you can read about the community project here and here, from my good friend Vivek). For the select few senior students that had their first taste of a chaotic weightlifting
Community Crew
environment, only exciting futures are ahead if the nurturing of their talent and love for the sport is looked after. I'm sure Arun and Khalia have got it nailed.

Turning up to smiles and Namastes and the occasional bokeh of flowers, never got boring. Turning up to the academy gym and coaching these lifters was never going to be fluent from the off, though their welcoming, versatile and patient nature made my first few adapting weeks highly integrative. Just over 5 exciting months was spent working with the lifters of Kankia school academy. I had a senior, Mr Cormac and sir Ramesh Chandra Padhi, to help me adjust to these hyper mobile, hyper enthusiastic lifters and offer me a background understanding of the type of athletes I'd be working with. I soon found out that they where a completely different breed to the UK.. "what do you mean no mobility is needed?" (at least limited for most)
There was always room for 'hangs' and 'overhead holds'
#straightarmstrength #adaptable
everyday their nature and thirst for knowledge (and that determination for that extra kilo) was a blessing to coach! One athlete that stuck out a mile off was a little 50kg spring box Ashwin (spelling?). When every maximum day came around he'd prep by himself during the warm-up, handstands for the lockout, speed bear crawls and overhead bits, but when it came to the platform he'd pull under that bar like no other, kissing that floor, and even when the session had finished or he'd miss his final attempt, when ever i'd look away he'd be back up there trying to get that last lift…and that extra kilo. An attitude you can't buy!

But they weren't just full time lifters. Their dedication to their academic and social studies was beyond impressive. Though at times sleep and recovery would be sacrificed and the odd tear would flow in anxiety over exams, this would just demonstrate their continual commitment to making a difference to their unique lives. Truly missing all the lifters!
Academy Girl lifters #rawtalent

My experience wasn't just surrounding Lathi and Kankia. The hours spent keeping mobile in the office chairs, getting involved in deep debated discussions, taking over Berhampur's fruit supplies, being recognised as a local in Tamana, desperately trying to learn the local language and creating friendships to last, thats what made my stay an unforgettable one.

So thats just a small piece of my stay on the East Coast of Orissa. Thank you to everyone that contributed to challenging my beliefs, theories, philosophy, physical capacity and transparent experiences, but a huge acknowledgement to Suheil Tandon (BOSSman) for dedicating your energies to such a magnificent cause 'ProSport Development'. Continue to grow and nurture the authentic talent your producing!

Oh but lets not forget the Mosquitos, thanks for chewing up half my leg and forcing my immune system into true adaptation-overdrive.

p.s. I didn't get ill once.. why? I Stayed Carb'd (banana'd) up to meet my demands! (I win Matt sir).
